It seemed at first an unlikely collaboration: Mavis Staples – gospel icon and civil rights campaigner – hooking up with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. Yet their first album together, 2010's You Are Not Alone
, was so warmly received it seems to have convinced them to continue their working relationship. This time around, One True Vine
sees Staples stripping back her sound to the
basics – acoustic guitar, mainly – and letting that wondrous voice
stand out. There are covers here – including Funkadelic's Can You Get to That and Low's Holy Ghost – along with a handful of new compositions by
