The Flaming Lips Super Bowl Auto Advert

When the Flaming Lips formed nearly 30 years ago, the notion that the group would be performing a song called "Sun Blows Up Today" in a Super Bowl ad would have been as surreal as some of their lyrics.

But that's exactly what happens in a new car commercial, which sees the group starring in one of Hyundai's four spots during the big game, a 60-second video that will feature the band on-camera performing the brand-new, custom-written song bearing that name. See it HERE

Music, Science And A Cause

The music video directed by Adam Powell is for the band Sivu's song "Better Man Than He" and he wrote about their reason for the MRI imagery:
The video is a collection of data gathered from MRI scans and inspired by research into improving the management of children born with cleft lip and palate. The research carried out at St Bartholomew's Hospital is funded by Barts and the London Charity and CLEFT, a small London based charity.
I've just recently been obsessed with the idea of capturing images without conventional cameras/lenses - This seemed like a perfect opportunity to capture something somewhat unique and take a glimpse into an amazing & fascinating world.

Kris Kristofferson Honors Willie Nelson

Country legends Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson made a rare appearance at the Nashville songwriters’ haven - The Bluebird Cafe - as each received a brand-new honor from the Nashville Songwriters Association International: Kristofferson is the namesake of the association’s new lifetime achievement award, and selected Nelson to be its inaugural recipient.

In one respect, Sunday’s (January 27, 2013early show at the Bluebird Cafe was par for the course. A pair of country singers, songwriters and friends picked up guitars and shared the tiny stage to trade off on tunes they had written.

There was one huge difference, of course: Those songs included “Crazy,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and “Funny How Time Slips Away”. MORE HERE w/Video

The Coen Brothers Weave A Folk Music Tale

What if a folk singer got beat up outside a Greenwich Village nightclub in 1961?

Six, seven, or, maybe, eight years ago, as Joel Coen remembers it, that seemingly idle question about an unlucky singer in a hypothetical encounter at what used to be a real club called Gerde’s Folk City started bothering Mr. Coen, who writes and directs off-center movies with his brother, Ethan.

Next week some music industry insiders and perhaps a few potential buyers will finally see, and hear, the resulting film at a private, pre-Grammys screening in Los Angeles.

It is called “Inside Llewyn Davis.” And it promises to be quintessential Coen brothers fare — but different. MORE HERE

Jimmy Van Heusen 100

You've never heard of Jimmy Van Heusen? Well, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers has. You certainly know many of his songs.

The songwriter behind "Swinging on a Star," "Love and Marriage," "Come Fly with Me" and "My Kind of Town" won four Academy Awards and one Emmy for his work; he would have been 100 today (Saturday January 26, 2013).

His “Harlem Hospitality” was recorded by Cab Calloway and was his first published song.

Van Heusen had another side. During World War II, while writing songs for Hollywood movies, he was also doing dangerous work as a fighter test pilot.

He would work from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., five days a week, going over to the Lockheed plant (Burbank), flying these airplanes on behalf of the Air Force, and then, from 2 o'clock onward, he was writing songs.

Happy Birthday Aaron Neville

Aaron Neville's New True Story

Aaron Neville said recently that he had been trying to make a doo-wop album for the last 30 years, and that no record label would give him the chance.

It should go without saying that this borders on the outrageous, even by the usual standards of music industry shortsightedness. Perhaps not coincidentally, this frames “My True Story,” his first album on Blue Note, as a product of wish fulfillment and not just a smart recalibration.

Mr. Neville, who turns 72 today Thursday January 24, 2013, has built his vocal career on the dual impression of pliability and sincerity.
