Time Passes Slowly With Bob And George

One of the standout tracks from Bob Dylan’s Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 is the joyous “Time Passes Slowly.”

The demo for the song, which can be found on 1970′s New Morning, is presented twice. There’s a version with an arrangement that apes the crashing majesty of Joe Cocker’s Beatles cover “With A Little Help From My Friends.” That arrangement would be revamped a few years later for Desire ’s hard charging “Isis.”

And then there’s the version that features an actual Beatle, Dylan’s friend and future Traveling Wilbury George Harrison, who covered New Morning‘s easy-rhyming opening track “If Not For You” on All Things Must Pass.

Watch the video for “Time Passes Slowly,” featuring Harrison’s guitar and harmony vocals, above.

Sly Stone's Plan For Racial Harmony

Even at 70, after the collapse of Family Stone and heavy drug use, Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, wants to get back in the game. In an interview the Guardian’s Alexis Petridis, Stone explained that “albino musicians could neutralize all the racial problems...” Read it HERE

R.I.P.: Music Man Murray Gershenz

Murray Gershenz, the record collector turned character actor, has died. The 91-year-old died  Wednesday August 28, 2013.

Better known as “Music Man Murray,” Gershenz spent nearly three-quarters of a century collecting the more than 300,000 records that filled the dusty wooden shelves of his two-story record shop.

From opera classics to big band, country western, jazz, R&B and rock and original Edison cylinder recordings, Gershenz always lived up to his business credo, “You name it, we find it.”

The massive collection, and Gershenz’s years-long plight to sell it, was the subject of a documentary film, “Music Man Murray” (trailer above) which premiered last year. MORE HERE

Bobby then retired to his desk for a segment before the music continued with a solo set by Doe.

Just prior to another interview at Weir's desk, Doe was joined by Jason Crosby, Bobby, Jay Lane and Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools for a cover of Bob Dylan's "She Belongs To Me." The episode's final musical segment featured Keller Williams. K-Dub performed a song by himself, which was followed by a few tunes with Weir. The full band finale concluded with "Scarlet Begonias."

Symphony of Science Presents Monsters of the Cosmos

There’s something fascinating and forbidding and compelling about black holes. They’re weird, they defy our everyday logic, they’re the ultimate endpoints of matter.

But they’re fun, too, which is why seeing them as the topic of the latest Symphony of Science - music videos using autotuned scientists, is fun. This one is called  “Monsters of the Cosmos” (above). MORE HERE

The Beatles At The Beeb 2

Sleuthing by Beatles fans appears to have uncovered a new release from the Fab Four.

They discovered MCA Music in the Philippines – part of Universal Music, which now owns the Beatles' catalog – was promising on its Facebook page (since removed) a new anthology collecting previously unreleased recordings from their mid-60s appearances on BBC radio.

The amateur detectives are from Beatles fan-site WogBlog, who discovered both the month of release (November 2013) and the album art (above) for the new release entitled On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2.

Neither Universal's UK or US wings nor the Beatles' official website have confirmed the news. MORE HERE

Nazareth Frontman Suffers Second Stroke

The health problems continue for Nazareth frontman Dan McCafferty. He collapsed and required medical attention for the second time in a month and the band have been forced to cancel yet another run of shows.

Nazareth postponed a number of UK shows at the beginning of the year after McCafferty contracted a virus, then had to cancel a Canadian tour in July when he collapsed on stage.

A message posted on the website for Belgium’s Vosterfeesten event, which Nazareth had been scheduled to headline this past Sunday, reported that McCaffery was in a Swiss hospital “after he suffered a stroke,” adding that it was “the second [he'd had] in a short time.”

The veteran rockers have been forced to cancel additional shows in Germany and Sweden. MORE HERE & HERE

Tom Petty's Country Music Heartbreak

On May 26, 2013 Tom Petty took a swipe at modern country music from the stage of the Beacon Theater in New York City. He called today’s country “bad rock with a fiddle,” and further expanded on those comments during a recent interview.

It was far from a clarification or apology. During a chat with Rolling Stone published Monday (August 5, 2013), Petty laments what is missing in country music, a genre he says roots the Heartbreakers.

“I don’t really see a George Jones or a Buck Owens or any anything that fresh coming up,” Petty explains. “I’m sure there must be somebody doing it, but most of that music reminds me of rock in the middle 80s where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos.”

Petty didn’t name names or call out a specific sound before backing away from the topic. “I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have,” he furthers. “I’m sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the shitier stuff gets.”

The Los Lobos version of 'La Bamba' was recorded for the film of the same name.
