Harry Chapin December 7, 1942 – July 16, 1981

Harry Chapin was killed on the Long Island Expressway on July 16, 1981, several hours before he was to perform at a benefit concert — something he did often.

Entertainers, lawmakers and friends recall Chapin as a driving force behind making people aware of the issue of hunger in the United States and around the world. Chapin died several years before high-profile benefits like Live Aid became the norm, but many, including entertainer Harry Belafonte, credit Chapin for laying the groundwork. Belafonte says Chapin's social conscience came through not only in the lyrics of his songs, but in his actions offstage.
