R.I.P.: Bob Flanigan

Bob Flanigan, a founding member of the Four Freshmen, the well-scrubbed tight-harmony group begun more than 60 years ago, when all of its members really were undergraduates, died May 16, 2011. The Freshmen’s characteristic sound — which married harmonies joined as snugly as fine cabinetry with a lush improvisatory style that made the ensemble sound far bigger than it was — was a palpable influence on later groups like the Beach Boys and the Manhattan Transfer.

R.I.P.: Gil Scott-Heron

One of the most trenchant voices in American music fell silent yesterday, Friday May 27, with the passing of Gil Scott-Heron.

Reports confirmed that Scott-Heron had died St Luke's Hospital, New York, after falling ill on a return trip from Europe. His death brought to an end a troubled career that was blighted by personal turmoil and addiction, but which also saw the singer create some of the most influential music of the last 40 years. Who's Leaving Here

"Leaving Here" is a song written in 1963 by Motown songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland.

The Who recorded the song in the studio twice in 1965, and once for BBC Radio, but none of these recordings were released officially for decades; The 1985 compilation Who's Missing and the 1998 remaster of the Odds & Sods compilation album both included the song, though the latter states it is a previously unreleased version. An alternate take also appeared on the My Generation Deluxe Edition.

Happy Birthday Bob!

Dylan’s remarkable 50-year career began when he moved to the folk-music hub of Greenwich Village in 1961 from his native Minnesota. A year after arriving, Dylan wrote the civil-rights anthem “Blowin’ in the Wind.” He moved to rock and roll in 1965, and his classic “Like a Rolling Stone” was later voted the greatest song in rock history by Rolling Stone magazine.

One of the hallmarks of Dylan’s half-century in the public eye has been his ability to lead by example. MORE HERE

R.I.P.: Joseph Brooks

Somehow the producers of "Kids Are People Too" (1978 to 1988) got Patti Smith to appear on the show and take questions from the all-kid audience. Then, inexplicably, instead of singing one of her own tunes or performing one of the covers she frequently did of Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, or Neil Young songs, Patti chose to sing a completely straight version of Debby Boone’s treacly hit, “You Light Up My Life.” MORE HERE The song was written by Joseph Brooks who was found dead of an apparent suicide. Mondo Vanilli

Mondo_vanilli
In 1993, cyberculture prankster/provocateur/publisher RU Sirius, founder of Mondo 2000 magazine, composer Scrappi DuChamp, and performance artist Simone Third Arm, recorded an album for Trent Reznor's record label. They had met at Reznor's Los Angeles rental home, the house where the Manson Family killed Sharon Tate and others. Tim Leary had brought RU along to a housewarming party there and RU gave Reznor a demo tape of his band, called Mondo Vanilli. Reznor quickly signed the band to his then-nascent Nothing Records. Unfortunately, this great work of curious and quirky synth-industrial-pop, titled "IOU Babe," never made it to the record stores. Almost two decades later, Mondo Vanilli has officially released "IOU Babe" for free online. A CD with bonus material is coming shortly.Check it out HERE

As legendary folk-rocker Bob Dylan approaches a milestone birthday (70), there are plenty of tributes to his iconic mid-60s incarnation as the “voice of a generation.” But those seeking insight into the China-touring, Christmas-album-making, Victoria’s Secret–endorsing Bob Dylan of today need look no further than 1975, when he and a motley collection of musicians took a blowtorch to his sacred song canon. Still Crazy Cool After All These Years

Last Saturday in Toronto, a woman named Rayna Ford went to a Paul Simon concert. She called out to the singer: “Play ‘Duncan!,’” or words to that effect; Simon heard her better onstage than we do in this video taken from the audience. “You learned to play guitar in this song?” Simon replied, and invited her to get up alongside him. What happened next was very sweet, and genuinely moving: It’s the moment of Rayna Ford’s life, and a chance for Simon to show us that he’s still crazy/wonderful after all these years. MORE HERE

Pinkfloyd

The surviving members of Pink Floyd reunited onstage last night at London's 02 Arena during a stop on Roger Waters' Wall tour - marking only the second time that Nick Mason, David Gilmour and Waters had played together in the last 30 years. Waters and Gilmour performed "Comfortably Numb" as the crowd at the arena went absolutely insane, and during the finale of "Outside the Wall," Gilmour returned to the stage alongside Mason, who played a tambourine. The Rolling Stones recorded a version of ‘Satisfaction’ at Chess Studios in Chicago on May 10th 1965 but decided to have another go today in 1965. Keith didn’t like the sound of it with the harmonica on it and put the famous fuzz tone down at RCA’s studio in Hollywood. Keith had come up with the guitar riff in the middle of the night a week earlier. It gave the band their first number 1 single in the US.
