Last Drive On Devil's Slide

Seventy-six years after building an extension of California's Highway 1 at Devils Slide, Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) finally shut down the landslide-prone coastal road forever and opened a pair of state-of-the-art tunnels through a mountainside behind the precarious cliffs.







The opening of the Tom Lantos Tunnels (March 2013) put to rest decades of peril and frustration for motorists, and it closes the book on a fierce political battle to protect the rural character of the central and southern San Mateo County coast of California. source

Bay Area local band, The Curios wrote a great song 'Last Ride On Devil's Slide' and produced a cool video (above) to commemorate the event; there are even t-shirts.
