Bob Dylan And The Elusive Nobel Prize

Since 1996, Bob Dylan has been nominated every year for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

After President Obama recently presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the United States' highest honour, many hoped the Swedish Academy would follow suit.

There are dissenting voices among Dylan admirers, who hold his work to be sufficiently unique as to make a Nobel Prize superfluous; others have argued that while Dylan may not need the Nobel Prize, the Nobel Prize needs Dylan. MORE HERE & HERE

The Music of Inside Llewyn Davis Celebrated

A host of music stars came together last night (September 29, 2013) for Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating The Music of Inside Llewyn Davis, a fundraising concert for the American non-profit, the National Recording Preservation Foundation.

Jack White, Marcus Mumford, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith and many more were amongst those appeared at the sold-out, three-hour long folk music concert, which took place at New York's prestigious Town Hall venue. Inspired by the forthcoming new Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis, which is released on January 24, 2014, the film featured music from the T Bone Burnett-helmed soundtrack as well as the classic folk songs which inspired the movie, which is set in Greenwich Village in 1961. The Future Soul of Hiatus Kaiyote

Hiatus Kaiyote are a soul group – or "future-soul" group, as they call themselves – for those whose conception of soul is of a music that, at its most expansive and experimental, can incorporate elements of jazz, hip-hop, glitchy electronica, prog and rock.

Put it this way: Prince tweeted about the Australian quartet recently, and Animal Collective love them...

...as does Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of the Roots. "Once in a blue moon, something moves me so much I'm willing to alienate friends when an UNDENIABLE project comes along," he gushed. "THIS is that project."

Erykah Badu, too, is in thrall to their off-kilter melodies and fuzzy performances that were born out of jam sessions that were particularly free of form. source

Their most recent album is titled Tawk Tomahawk .

Fleetwood Mac feat. Christine McVie

Fleetwood Mac sent audiences at the O2 Arena in London into a craze last week (September 25, 2013) when the band’s original female lead vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter; Christine McVie, reunited with them onstage for the first time in 15 years.

McVie was a central member of Fleetwood Mac for 30 years and is credited with writing many of the band’s hit songs – including “Don’t Stop” (above) and “You Making Loving Fun” – two songs that helped make Fleetwood Mac’s eleventh studio album, Rumours, the tremendous success it has been. Another former bandmember, Peter Green - who left the group in 1970 - was in the crowd for the show, and Stevie Nicks dedicated the song 'Landslide' to the founding member of Fleetwood Mac.

Global Citizen Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder went slightly off message at one point in his performance at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on Saturday night (September 28, 2013). “We must do something about the gun laws in this country,” he declared, noting that John Lennon had died at the hands of a gunman years ago. He expanded on this idea for a moment, before starting into “Imagine,” Lennon’s hymn of yearning idealism.

The Global Citizen Festival, which for the second year drew a capacity audience of 60,000 to the Great Lawn, revolves around a single, stubborn mission: the end of extreme poverty worldwide. To that end, it’s an informational summit as well as a demonstration of public-interest might, timed to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly.

It’s also a marathon musical event: this year Mr. Wonder closed up shop after energetic sets by the guitar-slinging rock crooner John Mayer, the emphatically earnest R&B singer-songwriter Alicia Keys and the surging Southern rock band Kings of Leon, along with a brief but effective solo medley by Elvis Costello. Sunshine Daydream: Grateful Dead Veneta '72 DVD

Call it what you want: The Last Acid Test; The Field Trip; The Springfield Creamery Benefit; or perhaps simply 8/27/72.

Even the most casual of Deadheads are at least aware of the facts: the Grateful Dead played an outdoor concert in Veneta, OR that day, immersed in record-breaking heat. The show was a benefit to help keep Springfield Creamery going – a local business owned and operated by Ken Kesey’s brother Chuck.

Where the facts have morphed into legend over the years is the claim that this is – if not in the band’s history, then at least for that time period – THE SHOW. The Holy Grail.

Fortunately, The Field Trip needs to be a myth no longer: Rhino Entertainment has released Sunshine Daydream , a 3-CD/DVD collection that documents that day. The music itself is amazing, captured on 16-track analog tapes and stored lovingly in the Dead vaults all these years. It’s the filmed account of 8/27/72 (and the events that led up to it), however, that provides the proof that what happened in that field on that scorching-hot afternoon is worthy of four decades’-worth of buzz. There are many great films that document the Grateful Dead’s history; none capture the essence of the Grateful Dead family quite the way that Sunshine Daydream has. MORE HERE & HERE

Rush Remixed Vapor Trails

Rush fans were ecstatic when the group returned from a six-year hiatus with their 2002 LP, Vapor Trails, but some noticed that the record didn't quite sound right. "We overcooked it," bassist/singer Geddy Lee says now. "The mixes were really loud and brash. The mastering job was harsh and distorted."

Lee came to this realization not long after the record came out, but there was little he could do to fix the situation. Now, eleven years later, Rush fixed the situation by hiring producer David Bottrill to remix the album.

The remixed version of Vapor Trails hits shelves on September 30, 2013 but, thanks to Rolling Stone, you can hear a stream of it HERE.

Willie's Stolen Armadillo Story Goes Mainstream

Mainstream media has picked up on the Willie Nelson stuffed armadillo mascot theft story...apparently, there are no trivialities when it comes to an American living legend...

Sometime after Nelson played his last song of the night at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester New York on September 19, 2013, set down his battered guitar and signed his last autograph, someone sneaked onto the stage and made off with the band's unofficial mascot: a stuffed armadillo.

The Nelson camp took to the singer's Facebook page to appeal for help in finding the taxidermy thief. Hundreds of fans have responded, offering their sympathy and calling for vengeance.

Well,  time is running out for the armadillo bandit.

Mounting clues include pictures, a lead on the suspect’s name and her possible companion, and witnesses. Also gathering on the horizon: a posse of angry Willie Nelson fans and an enticing reward.

Texas Roadhouse, a chain of barbecue restaurants with ties to Nelson, is offering a $1,000 gift card for information leading to Ol’ Dillo’s return. Tipsters can call the restaurant at 800-TEX-ROAD. MORE HERE & HERE

King Crimson Comeback

After a dispute with the Universal Music Group, King Crimson founder Robert Fripp swore that he would never reunite the band he had formed in 1968.

But with the legal issues close to a resolution, Fripp has confirmed that he will indeed reunite the progressive rock band next year. Fripp is calling the reincarnation King Crimson VIII. Fripp said that the band will feature seven players - three Americans and four Englishmen - and will carry three drummers. While the band is reforming, Fripp says that they will not be doing any extensive touring.

The band is set to release a 24 disc compilation live set titled "Road to Red". The set also includes a remixed version of "Red". The set is currently available for pre-order.

Fripp has stated that the new King Crimson line up is himself, Gavin Harrison, Mel Collin, Jakko Jakszyk, Bill Rieflin, Pat Matstelotto, and Tony Levin. MORE HERE & HERE
