Memphis Music Hall Of Fame Inaugural Inductions

It was a beautiful mingling of generations and genres, of songs, stories and memories, as the Memphis Music Hall of Fame's inaugural class was inducted during a ceremony Thursday night (November 29, 2012) at The Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

Outside the theater, the children of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips and iconic radio deejay Dewey Phillips laughed together, and the sons of Otis Redding reminisced with their father's guitarist and songwriting partner, Steve Cropper. Others meeting for the first time, like ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill and Booker T. & the MG's rhythm man Lewie Steinberg, talked shop like old friends.

Bobby Bare On Folk

There’s this notion that folk and country music have historically been divided by sonics and by politics.

In the ’60s, folk was for the hippies, and country for the hawks, right? Folk was for trust funders with acoustic guitars, country for tobacco-spitting drawlers with fiddles and steels.

Ever discuss it with legendary country musician Bobby Bare? MORE HERE

Michael Jackson's Thriller At 30

Today (November 30, 2012) marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Thriller. Michael Jackson's blockbuster sold more than 100 million copies.

The zombie line-dance that supplanted the hokey-pokey at cheesy wedding receptions for decades to come. MORE HERE

Lightfoot Lauded/Beiber Booed At Grey Cup

When it works, having a combination of different artists from different genres performing together can make for a fantastic collide in the music world at live events like the Grey Cup and Super Bowl.

This year, Canada celebrated the 100th Grey Cup (Canadian Football League) in Toronto at the Rogers Centre on Sunday November 25, 2012 with a halftime show mixed bag consisting of performances by Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Canadian folk icon Gordon Lightfoot.

Justin Bieber faced a hostile homecoming. They booed when his face popped up on the JumboTron. They booed when a host spoke his name at the onset of halftime. And they booed with extra glee as he took the stage and throughout his medley of so-called hits.

The 74-year-old Lightfoot certainly did captivate the crowd Sunday. With the stadium lights down, Lightfoot opened the halftime show by materializing on a modest stage near the 50-yard line, dressed in black and strumming an acoustic guitar. The crowd roared. MORE HERE & HERE

The Endorphins of Music

Newly published research reveals three alternative ways you can release those mood-enhancing endorphins: Singing, dancing, and drumming.

That’s the conclusion of a study by University of Oxford psychologist Robin Dunbar. He and his colleagues report people who have just been playing music have a higher tolerance for pain—an indication their bodies are producing endorphins, which are sometimes referred to as natural opiates.

In their experiments, simply listening to music did not produce this positive effect. “We conclude that it is the active performance of music that generates the endorphin high, not the music itself,” the researchers write in the online journal Evolutionary Psychology.

R.I.P.: Larry Hagman

Actor Larry Hagman was so popular in American pop culture as the villainous 'J.R. Ewing' on television's 'Dallas' that when the character suffered a gunshot from a mystery character, the nation asked (with a little help from the promotions department) "Who Shot J.R.?"; which quickly became an iconic phrase. So massive was the fad, a song was recorded in honor of the phenomenon.

Of course, Hagman had other roles in a long Hollywood career; notably, the popular sitcom 'I Dream of Jeanie' and films 'Failsafe', Mother, Jugs & Speed, and Blake Edwards' Hollywood spoof 'S.O.B.'. His mother was the fabulous Mary Martin; most known for her role as Peter Pan on stage.

Larry Hagman played another role in rock n roll folklore ...

Not long before his death from a drug overdose Keith Moon asked his then neighbor Larry Hagman to drive him to the hospital to dry out. See below.
