At the same time country music was celebrated throughout the weekend in Indio, California, a star-studded party for jazz tunes was held in another state, New Orleans. Bruce Springsteen helped close the first weekend of the Jazz Festival with a two-and-a-half hour show.

Dr. John came out in the middle of the set for a rendition of Something You Got by Chris Kenner, a song that was thought to be played by the E Street Band five times in 1972, 1973 and 1974. MORE HERE & HERE

J.D. Souther at Stagecoach

The 65-year-old co-architect of the Southern California '70s country-rock sound has been happily touring to promote his latest album, “Natural History ”. He performed Saturday April 28, 2012 at the Stagecoach country music festival.

Ralph, Requests And Respect

Stanley

Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys played to a full house at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival Saturday April 28, 2012.

The famed “Dr. Ralph Stanley” got big cheers from an otherwise mellow crowd when he reminded the lounging audience he’s 85 years old and then he took requests. Photos HERE

Steve Martin pulled into Stagecoach for a performance Saturday that had him and the Steep Canyon Rangers slotted to play immediately after the bluegrass music patriarch.

"I asked who was going on when, and they said Ralph was opening," Martin said on his tour bus while relaxing on a bench seat with two banjos. "I said, 'No, Ralph Stanley doesn't open for me, I open for him.' So I came out and played a couple of songs and then he went on." MORE HERE

Stagecoach Blessings

Chris Isaak, making his Stagecoach debut, had a full tent that became even larger after Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers wrapped up their set.

Dressed in a blue sparkling suit, Isaak said that being at Stagecoach in the desert playing in a tent where there were bales of hay for benches made him feel like he was back at home in Stockton California at a 4-H meeting.

Those kind of one-liners permeated his set, and the third song in, he took a trip into the crowd to sing to the people. He brought up crowd members to dance and when he covered "Great Balls of Fire," he actually set the piano on fire.

Before kicking into his signature song "Wicked Game," Chris excalimed "God Bless Merle Haggard"

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. — He was that impossible rarity in modern music, a figure at once indelibly international and utterly local, whose shows in his hilltop barn drew fans and musicians from around the world, as well as the local carpenters, cops and firefighters who were part of his daily life.

More than two thousand of them came out on Thursday April 26, 2012 to mourn Levon Helm’s death and to celebrate the elusive alchemy he had created, which turned strangers into friends, the past into the present and Woodstock once again into a magical destination decades after its heyday was thought to have passed. Two days after their historic performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles performed their first U.S. concert at the Washington Coliseum. Cheap seats went for $2, with the better ones commanding $4. Over 8,000 fans packed into the venue by the time the band took the stage to perform “Roll Over Beethoven.”

Release The Blunderbuss

For the past decade, Jack White has established an undeniably thrilling brand, one which has hit many a watermark and attracted one of the industry’s most dedicated followings. For the past three years, Third Man Records — the physical shoppe, venue, and headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee — has hosted a variety of events, all cloaked in that White-endorsed mystery that makes it so alluring.

Following The Raconteurs’ Consolers of the Lonely in 2008, White has remained behind the scenes, even throughout the two LPs for The Dead Weather. Instead, he’s become a figurehead, something bigger than a musician, and his music now has taken on its own mythos, something even deeper than the mercurial days of Jack and Meg. So, with today's (April 24, 2012) release of his first solo effort Blunderbuss, there’s that to keep in mind. MORE HERE

R.I.P.: Chris Ethridge

Members of the International Submarine Band chose a name for their new group that practically assured it would never rise above cult status. Sure enough, that band disappeared with barely a trace after making a handful of recordings in the mid-1960s. But after ISB members Gram Parsons and Chris Ethridge teamed up with ex-Byrds singer and songwriter Chris Hillman and steel guitarist Pete Kleinow to form the pioneering country-rock group the Flying Burrito Brothers, the ISB won itself permanent footnote status in the history of pop music.

Ethridge, who has died at 65 of complications from pancreatic cancer, was the group’s bassist, and co-wrote several songs with Parsons, widely lauded as one of the most innovative figures in the marriage of country and rock in the 1960s. Ethridge also spent about eight years in Willie Nelson’s touring band, a gig during which he recorded one of Nelson’s most famous anthems, “Whiskey River.” MORE HERE

Recordiggy

The Ambassador of Record Store Day 2012 : Iggy Pop

In an age where our music collections live on hard drives and iPods, it's difficult to believe that record sales have actually been climbing for the past five years. And when we say "record sales," we're talking actual records. You know, those big black discs with grooves in them that are piled in your parents' basement. Even more surprising is that the majority of sales are taking place in independent record stores. According to Nielsen, the stores were the point of sale for 67 percent of all vinyl albums in 2011 and that's even increased already this year.

By the end of today, that number will likely be much higher thanks to the Black Friday of Saturdays for record stores: Record Store Day MORE HERE

"He just played two weeks ago," Ronnie Hawkins told CTV's Canada AM on Friday April 20, 2012.

Those were happy times, according to Hawkins.

"We laughed at everything. We were learning. We didn't know nothin'," Hawkins, said with a laugh.

For The Love Of Levon

Levon1

Levon Helm, a treasured voice in Americana music whose Southern drawl and busy-but-tight drumming brought an authenticity to The Band, is losing his decade-long battle with cancer, his family announced on Tuesday.

"Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer," a message reads on Helm's website. "Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey."

Helm, 71, was diagnosed with throat cancer in the late 1990s and underwent intensive radiation treatment which greatly damaged his voice. Over time he was able to sing again, but his once-strong tenor had become the weathered rasp that can be heard on his Grammy winning 2007 album, "Dirt Farmer." MORE HERE

The Hives Are Buzzing

Hives-15apr2012

Howlin' Pelle Almqvist is still one of rock's most engaging frontmen -- bringing to mind a young Mick Jagger with the way he struts around the stage with his hands on his hips before suddenly leaping in the air with a scissor kick.

The lead singer of the Swedish garage-revival band the Hives took the main stage at Coachella on Sunday night wearing a dapper tux and tails and a black top hat...then kicked ass. MORE HERE & HERE

James Joyce/Kool Keith Connection

Jameskeith

For aficionados of classic literature and hip hop music, there is a new game for you. It’s called, “Who said it, James Joyce or Kool Keith?”

The idea: “One is the most innovative writer of the 20th century, the other is James Joyce. Can you distinguish between sentences written by the Irish novelist and the lyrics of surrealist rapper Kool Keith?”

I Believe The Buzzcocks!

Ageism is real, and it affects musicians more than people in most other professions. Take old guys and punk rock. Try to convince an 18-year-old that "Harmony in My Head" by the Buzzcocks was a sonic revolution when it was released in 1977, and that "Ever Fallen in Love With Someone?" once packed a huge shock-of-the-new wallop. Byrne, St. Vincent, Byrne

St
